To gain a better understanding of public
perception of current and future transportation
needs for the state, ten focus group meetings
were held in various locations in the state
during mid March. Representatives for the
aging, low-income and disabled and
representatives from business, transit,
environmental groups, rural communities, and
economic development agencies were invited to
discuss their issues.
All groups brought some similar and some
different ideas to the meetings. Some
common themes included the following:
- the need for more funding for all modes
of transportation, and flexibility in the
use of those funds;
- the need for coordination and clear
communication and information on all
activities between IDOT and local
communities, regional and state
transportation, economic development and
human services agencies, and the public in
general;
- the recognition that transit, intercity
rail, freight, pedestrian and bicycle
facilities and services are important to
addressing future transportation needs; and
- the recognition that land use plays an
important role in transportation demand.
The Department took these comments, along with
comments received throughout the process, into
consideration and incorporated all comments into
the State Transportation Plan.
